1968 What A Year

WHAT A YEAR IT WAS! is a fascinating look at the headline events and news-making personalities of 1968. Told through compelling pictures and words, this lavish hardcover volume covers all of the year’s biggest stories—the news, entertainment, sports, fashion, fads and people that changed our lives forever. Plus, a generous sampling of vintage ads that will carry you back in time

1968 was an exciting year in a turbulent decade. Americans saw the CounterCulture go mainstream as big movie studios and independents alike rushed to catch a piece of the sex, drugs and rock ’n roll action ignited by 1967’s “Summer of Love.” The documentary “Monterey Pop” vividly captured headline performers in their glory at the granddaddy of all rock festivals. The Beatles fought off Blue Meanies in “Yellow Submarine’s” psychedelic cartoon Pepperland. Jane Fonda created a sensation with a sexy space striptease in "Barbarella." "Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In" and "The Mod Squad" were fresh TV favorites. Rock took on a harder edge with Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin in the vanguard. Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and the Supremes, and James Brown led the soul music charge.

The nation and the world were staggered by the loss of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. in April and Senator Robert F. “Bobby” Kennedy in June, both felled by assassins’ bullets near the end of a decade in which hope increasingly seemed to give way to violence. The Vietnam War continued abroad while Americans became increasingly polarized at home.

The first Big Macs were on the menu, the computer mouse was demonstrated, and the first manned Apollo mission blasted off. Hippie chic swept the fashion world. The Games of the XIX Olympiad took place in Mexico City and the Detroit Tigers come back from a 3-games-to-1 deficit to defeat the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals.

Wherever you were or weren't in 1968, WHAT A YEAR IT WAS! 1968 will bring a sentimental smile to your face as you relive that very special time. And you can personalize it on the special dedication page for a truly unique gift, perfect for sharing with family and friends.
